Are we getting any better?

March 5, 2013 Posted by Kate Johnson Uncategorized 2 Comments

The more I look around, the more I see disrespect. I am not driving fast enough or leaving a light quick enough and I get the horn and the ‘finger.” You stand in the grocery line that says 20 items, and people don’t care they have their baskets filled with double that. They want to get out faster than you and really don;t want to listen to the rules.

Not only is society more disrespectful of people, but of things. Trash on the ground, people throwing garbage out the window as they drive by, or my favorite, opening their car door to leave the garbage in a nice neat stack OUTSIDE their vehicle. Why? What is it that makes us less likely to take care of our world, brothers and sisters and to help each other out? We are all struggling through life, so why do we care less? What does it mean to love one another?

Are these insignificant things? In the scheme of things, yes and no. They lead to a much larger issue, don’t they. If you are faithful with little things, you get more. But the reverse is also true.

    Hi Kate —

These are difficult times in many ways, and the overall coarsening of our culture is certainly part of it.

I am taken to the Word of God which says “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks” and “Life and death are in the power of the tongue.”

It has taken me some time and “inside of me” work to get to where it doesn’t offend me any more. Not that I don’t notice…..I do, and I don’t like it. But I will not let the offenses of others determine how I act.

I have found it to be most productive to be happy and friendly towards all I encounter, no matter what they do. I am not always successful, but there is the effort and it helps me keep Gods perspective. After all, why should I be surprised when sinners sin?

The absolutely very best thing I can do about those who are offensive is to pray to them as follows: “Loving Father, please work your will your way in your timing in every part of this persons life. They need You and they need Your love. In the Name of Jesus, I commit them to You.

Kate, may our God richly bless you and George.

Yo are so right, Pete. All we can do is pray for each other. And your point about how we allow others to determine what we do is an extremely important one. People can’t make us feel one way or another, we must take responsibiity for our own feelings and actions and stop giving that power to another. Thank youfor your comments.
